PeerGuardian is a legacy, free, open-source privacy firewall application. It was originally designed to block incoming and outgoing data connections based on massive IP address blacklists.
Developed by Phoenix Labs, its core purpose was to protect user privacy during Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing. It aimed to prevent external organizations and monitoring groups from tracking user download activity. Core Functionality
IP Address Blacklisting: The application matches active network connections against an extensive database of known blacklisted IP address ranges.
Targeted Blocking: It actively blocks communication with entities like anti-P2P organizations, government agencies, specific universities, or suspected corporate tracking servers.
Protocol-Wide Coverage: Unlike simple browser tools, it filters all IPv4 traffic. This includes TCP, UDP, and ICMP protocols.
